There are some really cool things happening in Durban this weekend, especially for those who enjoy thespian pursuits.
08-17 May – A Woman’s Word
The European Film Festival (EUFF) is on at Gateway this weekend, which this year will be showcasing women in film. “A Woman’s World†brings twelve internationally acclaimed films representing some of Europe’s finest work to South African audiences.
You can expect to see amazing talents like Marion Cotillard (whose performance in ‘Two Days, One Night†garnered her an Oscar nomination for best actress), Catherine Deneuve, Charlotte Gainsbourg (daughter of the legendary French singer Serge Gainsbourg), Valeria Golina and Maribel Verdú (who takes on the role of a bullfighting “Snow White†in Pablo Berger’s hypnotically eerie and erotic silent film “Blancanievesâ€).

John Kani stars as Robert Khalipa who has been living in exile in Sweden for over thirty years with his wife Anna Olsen and their daughter Ayanda, until a dramatic event thousands of kilometres away unfolds, one that he has been waiting for all his life.
Nelson Mandela is released from Robben Island.

15-16 May 2015Â – Jesse Clegg in Durban
If Johnny Clegg isn’t your thing, you can catch the younger Clegg, Jesse on a mini tour in Durban this weekend. Jesse is bringing his unique brand of homegrown rock to Ollies in Amazimtoti on Friday and to Hanger 8 at Virginia Airport on Saturday.

Now until – 23 May 2015Â – Pre-Code Forecast 1931 by Andreas Chasomeris
An exhibition by Durbanite Andreas Chasomeris that explores History, Cinema and Censorship around the period of 1931, which is significant as the Great Depression was being felt around the world and Cinema in Europe and Hollywood was embracing a more progressive society but by 1934 the Catholic League of Decency promised to eradicate any immoral or vice ridden films from the screen.
Chasomeris’ personal response from a critical evaluation based on the past documented histories and the present lived experience of being a gay artist in post-Apartheid South African context.
The exhibition includes influences of Art Deco, Marlene Dietrich, Weimar Republic, Jean Harlow, Busby Berkeley musical numbers, Cole Porter and a touch of Agatha Christie.
