Alex’s Weekender: Johannesburg

Sunday Service

If are a regular reader of the weekender (doubtful) you may have noticed that my Weekenders have been absent the past week or two. This has happened in the past but I have always rebounded with a vengeance. This will sadly not be the case and I am sorry to bid you all adieu. This weekender will be my last. Not to worry though I am sure the indomitable MTF team will find someone even better to keep you up to date with all the greatest happenings in and around our electric city.

That all out of the way let’s move on to happenings to keep you busy during our first real hit of winter.

Thursday 04 June  2015

This Thursday is once again First Thursdays in Braamfontein, and once again Fourthwall Books looks like they have the most interesting (to me at least) offering in the form of Memory Card Sea Power.

This event is the Johannesburg launch and sale of the eponymous broadsheet newspaper charting the lives of Tanzanian Stowaways living near the harbour in Cape Town, South Africa.

The photographer, David Southwood, and writer, Sean Christie, who both walked the mile will be in conversation at 18h30 with Professor Anton Harber.

DETAILS

Thursday, 04 June, 18:00 pm (conversation with creators, 18:30 pm)

Fourthwall Books, 5 Reserve Street, Braamfontein.

If you are in more of a partying mood then Suburban State should be your first and last consideration.

And if you needed any more reason to attend Jourgs biggest seen and be seen monthly party in one of Joburg’s most historic venues, they are also hosting Liver’s album launch.

Liver is one of the Sub_Urban founders, who, until recently, dropped out of the public music space to “find himself”, focusing on other things and working his love and passion back for the art.

But he is back and to celebrate he has brought some of friends with him in the form of PH Fat, Mix N Blend, Dank, Tommy Gun, up from CT.

The Suburban team also say they have got an even bigger sound system in. This really promises to be one of the biggest and best Sub-urban’s to date and definitely not to be missed.

DETAILS:

Saturday, 06 June, 13:00 – 14:00

Constitution Hill, 11 Kotze Street, Braamfontein.

Tickets online: R100 | R150 at the door.

Saturday – Sunday, 06-07 June 2015

Saturday and Sunday see the launch of yet another market. The whole market space is really starting to feel a little crowded but this particular one could be great. It is called the Tin Factory and is set in one of the coolest venues around Joburg. The market which shares a name with the space is a venue steeped in history ranging from textile factories to a modern day design emporium. This historic warehouse has since been refurbished into a thriving venue. If there is one thing we do well it is convert gritty former industrial spaces into gorgeous spaces for everyone to gather and have a great time.

DETAILS:

Saturday & Sunday, 06 & 07 June, 09:00 am – 17:00 pm

The Tin Factory, 20 Archimedes Street, Kramerville.

Tickets: R30

Sunday 07 June 2015

Sunday I highly recommend you venture into Greenside and into Mish Mash. Being a Sunday it will be safe and free from drunk underage youths. There you will find a little event called Sunday Service.

This is really a secret gem for all music and stand up comedy lovers that like to keep things low key. If any of you remember Boosh when it was still at Mama’s before Straw turned into the the teen heartthrobs they are drawing in ever expanding crowds, Sunday Service is exactly like those first Booshes just some rad bands (and now comedians and DJs too) pumping out great music. No crowds, no long wait to get a drink or something to snack on, just a great way to end your Sunday with a few mates.

DETAILS:

Sunday, 07 June, 14:00 – 20:00 pm

Mish Mash, 20 Glen Eagles Road, Greenside.

Free Entrance.
