Spice Route Viognier 2014

Spice Route Viognier is grown on the deep soils of the Swartland and the unirrigated bushvines provide grapes with deep, concentrated fruit and rich minerality.

IN THE VINEYARD:

The Viognier is grown on deep Malmesbury shale soils on Klein Amoskuil farm. This un-irrigated bushvine was planted in 2001, yielding the lowest crop on the farm, at an average of just 1 ton per hectare.

HARVEST DATE: 4 February 2014

WINEMAKING:

The grapes were hand-picked at 24.3 degree Balling. Bunches were pressed whole, extracting only the delicate must. The wine went straight to old French barrels for fermentation and 10 months maturation on the lees before bottling.

WINEMAKER’S COMMENTS:

The vineyard is starting to mature well, producing fruit with complexity. The intense fruit character of Viognier is complimented by the rocky shale soils it grows on and wellsupported by the neutral oak vessels. A bold but elegant style of wine with very good aging potential. – Enjoy!

TASTING NOTE:

Aromas of stone fruit and acacia blossom. The palate is a complex weave of bold fruit and bright savoury flavours, wellbalanced apricot and delicate spice.
