Paula’s Weekender: Cape Town

Summer is coming…in 4 months. Okay let’s not wish time away. But next week is the winter solstice, which means I’ll start telling myself that sunrise is noticeably earlier. I just can’t get used to this current business of darkness at 7am. It’s weird, and downright unpleasant.

The one good thing that comes from the sun being such a lazy bastard lately is you don’t have to get up that early to catch a sunrise from the top of a mountain somewhere. If you get up at say, 6:30, and take a stroll up Lion’s Head with a flask of coffee and some rusks, you’ll easily be there as the first rays peek over the horizon.

As the clever people at Alexander Bar so eloquently put it: “We gently remind you to take active steps not to succumb to the pathetic Capetonian tendency to hibernate with box wine on your Coricraft. Get up, engage, be moved.”

On that wise note there are some great shows at Alexander Bar this weekend. Have a look at your options here. They’re also running OMG quiz nights every Wednesday for the next month or so.

On Thursday and Friday night, Michelle Theron of La Motte is taking over [spasie], Cape Town’s only underground restaurant. Tickets may be sold out for Thursday by the time you read this, but you can check here, and book for next week when another top chef will be serving up a gourmet set menu to a small group of fortunate individuals.

Also on Friday night, the Goatshed at Fairview kick off their winter Food & Wine evenings with Viva Italia. Four delicious courses and wine – this is a really fun way to kick off your weekend. Why not stay out there and make a night of it? Fairview will gladly give you suggestions of nearby places to stay if you contact them.

On Saturday morning I’ll do my weekly veg shop at OZCF‘s winter base in Granger Bay.

Great coffee, fresh bread, breakfast and lunchy things, and of course all sorts of seasonal organic veg.

In case you’ve forgotten, the wonderful thing about this time of year is these magical, spongy, fungal growths called mushrooms (!!!) start popping up between the pine needles all over our Cape forest floors. Cecila Forest is full of them, as is Franschhoek.

This Mushroom Guru has all kinds of info on how to pick the right ones and not poison yourself, as well as the correct way to preserve the delicate balance of nature in this business of foraging. But anyone in their right mind would go with an expert for their first few goes.

Delheim have a mushroom forage in early July where the experts will teach you what you need to know and you’ll enjoy a fungi themed lunch afterwards.

Your winter special to enjoy this weekend is a seasonal gourmet feast at The Conservatory at the beautiful Cellars-Hohenort. At R180 for 2 or R210 for 3 courses – this is one not to miss this winter. The special is available 7 days a week for lunch and dinner, with the exception of Sunday lunch. Be sure to quote ‘winter special’ when booking.

On Monday night at Cape Town Comedy Club some pretty top notch comedians that you may have heard of are standing up, making you laugh, and raising money for a 5 year old called Junaid from Mitchell’s Plain who really needs our help. Details here.

Happy weekend everyone!

Don’t let winter keep you indoors1 Get out there and send us a tweet or something about what gems you’re finding… @MoreThanFoodCT or comment on a Weekender post and tell us about your weekend ideas. Until next week…
