Wine-Searcher lists the world’s best value wines

Raats red Jasp for blog

Wine-Searcher has listed Raats Red Jasper 2013 as one of the world’s top wine under $10 (R125). The vintage boasts 5 stars from Platter as well as a slew of top scores, including 90+ points from Stephen Tanzer and 90-92 points from Neal Martin of the Wine Advocate.

Dominated by Cabernet Franc,  Raats Red Jasper 2013 tastes of dark, black fruits interspersed with raspberry and red cherry crispness. This is complemented by a fine tannin structure. A baby MR de Compostella, the 2013 is already drinking well but will age beautifully for 5 to 7 years. We only have a few bottles in the cellar (at R155 each), but fortunately the 2014s will be released soon.

Wine-Searcher also lists  De Morgenzon Maestro White 2013 , a white wine produced in Stellenbosch, as a top wine for sale at under $20 (R250). The 2013 is no longer available, but the current vintage won the Best White Blend trophy at this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards. A blend of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Viognier, it received 92 points from Christian Eedes and offers tremendous value at R175. The wine estate’s name, ‘De Morgenzon’, means ‘the morning sun’ and is so-named because this vineyard is the first within its valley to be kissed by the early morning sunshine. If you happen to pass by the estate you may hear Baroque music drifting over the vines because the owners believe this positively affects ripening.
