I’ve just realized that I’ve been writing the Weekender every fortnight for over a year now – and for the most part it’s been pretty easy. Considering that we live in such a small city there’s no shortage of rad goings-on to write about. It’s no different this week or next, so read on…

This weekend we’re reminded to give back, be part of positive change and get involved in the Mandela Day themes of education and literacy; food security; shelter and infrastructure; service and volunteerism.

If you want to get involved here’s an idea for you:

DARG and TEARS are two fantastic shelters and homes to many pups and cats. They also provide domestic animal medical support to their surrounding communities.

They’re always super welcoming to volunteers – so pop your head in there or give them a call to set up a dog walking orientation or just to find out how you can help.

For the third year running the Cape Town Nu World Festival is being held at City Hall.   This unique event brings together artists from all over Africa to once again inspire, unite and educate on both Friday and Saturday. The lineup looks incredible – tickets here.

Madame Zingara is back! I’m sure you know this. But I’m reminding you now to get tickets before it’s too late. If you’ve been before you know it’s worth every cent. If you haven’t been then now is the time – I (along with everyone I know who’s been) highly recommend it. The whole experience is fantastic. Details of their latest masterpiece here.

Now, onto next weekend… On Friday and Saturday (the 24th and 25th) the Breedekloof Soetes & Soup Festival returns to beat away those winter blues with WINE! And Soup!

All the participating wineries are running specials of up to 25% off on red and fortified wines – so you can stock up for the remainder of winter.

There are accommodation specials running too, in this most beautiful of wine routes. The snow capped surrounding mountains will have you enthralled. Details of the festival, and a link to tickets here .

On Saturday the 25th there’s an opportunity to stuff your face with mussels and beer (wine actually because the ticket includes tastings) at the Ultra Mussels Wine Tournament. It’s being held at Den Anker and their Belgian beers go SO well with their fresh mussels and shoestring fries. But Constantia and Cape Point team up against Elgin and Bot River in a friendly competition between these old and new wine regions so there’ll be no shortage of great wine for you to enjoy too.

On Sunday the 26th, from 9am, the annual Street Food Festival takes place in Woodstock.

Guys, I’m seriously bummed I’m missing this due to work ALL day. Please go in my place. Eat, drink and mingle for me. All the big foodie (in a good way) names are behind this day of creative-street-food. There are talks, a market and a dinner. The market portion of it is free entry but book for talks or dinner and get more info here.
