We regularly visit Stellenbosch and more often than not wine is involved, leaving us with the dilemma of finding accommodation that is unfortunately, due to the popularity of the town, prohibitively expensive. Â We found Bonne Esperance Studio Apartments on exactly such an occasion: A visit to the popular De Warenmarkt.
We have a severe aversion to guest houses and prefer to self-cater and these guys tick all the boxes: Â The amenities are modern and everything is in working order, you have enough space and privacy and best of it all: It is affordable (rates start at R700 per person sharing). Â Did I mention the free wi-fi that actually works?
Many establishments claim to be “walking distance” from central Stellenbosch; this one is.  Situated opposite the Botanical Gardens close to the corner of Riebeeck Street, it really is actually walking distance from the Town Hall – we even managed the short distance from De Warenmarkt in a slightly tipsy state in less than 5 minutes.
The kitchenette is small but functional. Â The shower delivers a powerful, cleansing burst of water. Â The selection of television channels is one of the largest we’ve seen in such an establishment. Â The decor is also soothing without being boring. Â The old Victorian house has been beautifully restored and still keeps all of its character but lost the ghosts and (I assume) rotting floor boards.
Bonne Esperance Studio Apartments is a perfect base for the independent traveler wanting to explore the town on their own terms, or as a comfortable haven for people on a business trip. Â It’s a beautiful space, well managed and delivers exactly what it promises.
