THE WEEKENDER: CAPE TOWN

Capetonians! Keep in mind that you’ve only got until the end of the month to take advantage of our city’s winter specials… Here are few ideas for the coming weeks, along with the usual goings-on this weekend.

Freres Bistro seems to go from strength to strength – I’ve never heard a bad word nor personally experienced anything but deliciousness on a plate from their kitchen.
They have a constantly evolving menu and a winter lunch special to make you drool.

There are pizza and wine specials running at The Foreign Exchange in Obs – but their entire menu is reasonably priced – so why not kick off your weekend early (and incredibly irresponsibly) with Beer Pong on a Thursday night? Or, head there for happy hour on a Friday from 5pm. They have fun things happening almost every night of the week actually. Details here.

I’m gonna suggest that you take a hike up a steep mountain on Saturday. The good weather should hold until then at least, and with all the drinking and eating going on you’ll feel better with life after a bit of a sweat.

I like to keep it realistic though, and grab a fresh croissant or pretzel roll from Dinkel German Bakery on my way up to the parking area on Tafelberg Rd.

Give India Venster a little meander, have your picnic on top and take the cable car down.
Or if (like me) more than a glass or two of wine on Friday night has left you feeling like you’re experiencing a preview of death; then a saunter up the first part of the Platteklip trail, and a right turn at the first path you come to, might do just fine.
This will take you along the contour path running across the lower front of Table Mountain. It’s a gentle walk with rewarding views and plenty of little waterfalls at this time of year.

This weekend, live music eatery Cafe Roux in Noordhoek have some folk and indie artists playing. Namely, Hot Water on Friday and Farryl Purkiss on Saturday. Music starts at 7pm, tickets are around R130 and are available here.

As I hinted at earlier – this sunshine is only predicted to last until Saturday – the next cold front arrives on Sunday.
Which is perfect timing to retreat indoors to The Day Before Thursday market at City Hall. Usually held in the super-hipster Woodstock Foundry on a random Wednesday of each month (there you go, in case the name confused you, this is happening on SUNDAY) this is one of the city’s best market vibes – the music’s as good as the food, vintage clothing and South African designer jewellery on sale.
Future Nostalgia will be on vinyl from 12pm.. and DBT has collaborated with Open Design Cape Town to mark the end of the design festival, so this promises to be a fantastic Sunday out.
