Latest releases from a Cape First Growth: Reyneke

‘One of Stellenbosch’s finest estates,’ notes Neal Martin. ‘These wines fulfill both in a sensory and intellectual way.’

Reyneke has firmly established itself as a favourite amongst the world’s leading commentators. Not only has it once again been ranked as a ‘First Growth’ in Tim Atkin’s newly released South Africa report, but the September Decanter rates the Reserve Red 2012 as the best Syrah in the country. The latest releases reinforce their position as one of the finest Syrah producers in Stellenbosch, and South Africa.

‘Syrah is emerging as South Africa’s champion red grape,’ says Tim Atkin. Both the Reserve Red and Biodynamic Syrah feature prominently in his report, with the former chosen as a Red Wine of the Year. The Biodynamic Syrah 2013 is spectacular value and was recently Jancis Robinson’s ‘Wine of the Week’, scoring a massive 17/20.

The Reserve White 2014 is a unique interpretation of Sauvignon Blanc and has long been one of our top Cape whites. The wine is 90% oak fermented and matured for 9 months in large foudres. It offers refinement as well as power and longevity – a cracking example of why South African whites are so highly regarded internationally.

The Reyneke wines were the first to be certified biodynamic in South Africa, reflecting Johan Reyneke’s belief that the healthiest-possible vineyards produce the most vibrant and terroir-expressive fruit. As with all these fine wines, they are limited and sell out quickly.

Tasting Notes

Reyneke Biodynamic Syrah 2013 (R115)

‘I was impressed by the entire Reyneke range…but I was especially enthusiastic about (this wine) for its interest, charm and obvious integrity. I found it especially winning and attractive but also wonderfully wholesome. I enjoyed the intensity of the red-fruit flavours and the ambitious structure and persistence. I think it will be even better and more interesting next year and should last into the next decade, but overall it already tastes round and velvety. It is clearly not copying northern Rhône and nor is it one of the many South African Syrah/Shirazes that are too redolent of oak, sugar and alcohol. I gave it the massive (for me) score of 17 out of 20.’ – Jancis Robinson

Reyneke Reserve Red 2013 (R315) – order by email only

An intriguing wine bursting with Rhône-like, savoury charm – crushed black pepper, dried coriander and general biltong spice. This is a hugely complex wine that shape-shifted in the best possible sense over a 3-day period. There are firm tannins that need time to meld, but these confidently harness the modern and beguiling red berry fruit, adding structure to the rich and savoury palate. Best in 5-10 years’ time. – James Pietersen, Wine Cellar

Reyneke Reserve White 2014 (R180)

A unique expression of Sauvignon Blanc that stands apart in style. The oak is well balanced while the wine offers depth – great fruit intensity with none of the green notes associated with this variety. The palate is confident and the nose expressive. More approachable than in previous vintages, but a white that nonetheless needs 2-3 years from vintage to show its best. – James Pietersen, Wine Cellar
