Alex’s Weekender: Johannesburg

Cellar-Rats-Wine-Festival

This Weekend has come and what is the weekend without The Weekender? The weather has become a little damp since last weekend. The funny thing about it is that people are freaking out, but this happens every year. This is how we do summer (spring is a myth in Africa). It’s a cycle of Hot Hot Rain Rain Rain Hot Cloud. Being in the rain section of the cycle doesn’t mean you should stay inside and mope though. Our wonderful city still has loads to offer. So much so that you will quickly forget the weather is pretty kak.

For the edgier amongst our readers I recommend checking out Misha Joy’s exhibition of works she created to represent her journey through her Psychology Masters and Internship. Hosted by Concrete Wave Custom , this is an event not to be missed. This quirky shop promotes tattoo, skate and art. I am lucky enough to be the first artist to exhibit in their space.

There will be complimentary wine (or beer) and snacks, but please feel free to go out for dinner or drinks on the Greenside strip (Spiceburg would be good considering the weather) after enjoying the art.

Or if manual labour is not what you’re about then the SA on Tap Craft Beer, Food, and Music Festival may be more more up your alley, and lets be honest here if you’re reading this it probably is because good food, drink and music is what More Than Food is all about. This years event features 20 of the country’s best brews, exquisite gourment street foods, and some of SA’s top performing bands – Monark, Rubber Duc and Justin Serrao. Not to mention it’s all taking place in Pretoria’s botanical gardens. They are a truly magical place, especially now after it’s rained. Rich earthy smells, and extra vibrant colours will add a real sense of magic to the occasion, just remember to bring a blanket to sit on because seating is always at a premium and nobody digs a muddy bum.
