Seasons are so important. And no one realises this better than the farmer and winemaker. Without enough cold units and rain in winter we are in trouble, but even so, everyone looks forward to Spring! It is a time when – especially in the Franchhoek Valley – all the colours seem brighter and the air even more fresh than usual.

While each season is special for its own reasons, seasonal produce is one that causes much enthusiasm in the Pierneef à La Motte kitchen. And although seasonality might be all the hype, it is nothing new.

Hetta van Deventer-Terblanche, respected food historian and culinary manager for La Motte, introduces us to the heritage of preserves and how using and preserving seasonal fruit became part of the story of Cape Winelands Cuisine. And as we celebrate Heritage Month during September,  Professor Johann Kirsten, the mastermind behind the certification of Karoo Lamb, Rooibos tea and Honeybush tea, shares his journey with heritage food in a special guest column for this edition of our Estate News.

Before the end-of-the-year rush, Spring also brings new inspiration – just when one needs it! Appreciate the bounty of the season, celebrate our rich heritage and do visit us on the estate to enjoy some of the seasonal splendour!
