A ‘bloody good’ Bordeaux lookalike — Fleur de Thenac 2009

‘I cannot express in a few lines just how terrific this wine is’  (Matthew Jukes, Daily Mail)

‘Damn fine…and hedonistic’  (Jancis Robinson MW)

‘…bloody good’  (Victoria Moore, The Telegraph)

Fleur de Thénac 2009 is one of the most raved-about value wines of the year, and it looks set to become our most popular new import. This impressive ‘baby Pomerol’ is produced within spitting distance of Bordeaux in neighbouring Bergerac – a region that offers similar wines, but at a fraction of the price. The property is literally just over the Bordeaux AOC border and the wines are made by Denis Durantou of Château L’Eglise Clinet.

The 2009 is a rich and modern expression of what Parker calls a ‘magical… watershed’ vintage. A Merlot-dominated blend, it abounds with luscious red fruits and spice, balanced by refreshing acidity. Drink it over the next 5 years.

This is a delicious wine from one of the greatest vintages in living memory. Buy it by the case load and save up to 15% on your order.

Tasting Notes

Château Thénac Fleur de Thénac Rouge 2009 (R215)

‘The owner has poured squillions into making the wine taste like a young Pomerol. The property is only just over the border from Castillon, after all. The magician of Eglise Clinet Denis Durantou is now consulting. Damn fine. Gamey, ripe and hedonistic. Giles Coren’s professed best house red ever (according to Twitter). VGV [very good value]. Drink 2011-2015.’ – Jancis Robinson, 16 points

‘Bergerac is one of the Bordeaux outposts where the wines are very similar in style but often a lot less expensive in price. I cannot express in a few lines just how terrific this wine is, suffice to say that it is from the epic 2009 vintage and it is rich, powerful and dominated by the regal Merlot grape on tiptop form. This is one of the best value red wines of the year. Do not miss out on the opportunity to secure stock of this wondrous wine. It will age well for a further five years, too.’ – Matthew Jukes, Daily Mail

‘I tried it for the first time last week and it is bloody good. Chateau Thénac is in Bergerac, to the east of Bordeaux, but you could think of this wine as a pocket-money Pomerol. It’s lovely, made with 75 per cent merlot, 15 per cent cabernet franc and 10 per cent cabernet sauvignon. Being from the ripe 2009 vintage it is rounded and plump and ever so easy to drink, but not flabby. It also has at its heart a trace of the drinking chocolate Poulain powder that I often find in right bank bordeaux.’ – Victoria Moore, The Telegraph
