Three easy drinking wines to get you through the week

When I was learning German in high school, one of my favourite words was “pech.” I just like the way it sounds, although the meaning is not as appealing (it translates as bad luck). In fact, in Germany an unlucky person is called a “Pechvogel” or a “bad luck bird”. You know, that type of person who always gets pulled over in a roadblock or stubs their toe twice on the coffee table.

In the past month I’ve had my fair share of pech: two car breakdowns, one collapsed ceiling, one scammed credit card, a faulty ADSL line, a broken pair of sunglasses, a wonky oven and an infected foot from a thorn.

And yet, I REFUSE to think that I’m a Pechvogel when there are so many things that offset all the schleppiness. Cape Town’s long sunny days, YouTube videos of baby sloths, pizza from Massimo’s. Of course, a huge consolation is our country’s abundance of reasonably priced wine, which never ceases to make a bad day a great one.

So, on that note, here’s to kicking bad luck in the butt.

buiten blanc de noir

Buitenverwachting Blanc de Noir

I drank this after particularly stressful day at work and it definitely helped me to see the world through (ahem) rosé-tinted glasses. This is so easy to drink it should be illegal. Strawberry and peach flavours make it a delightfully fresh and crisp Summer quaffer.

Price: About R52.00 a bottle

malbecNeethlingshof Malbec 2014

Malbec is the darling of Argentinean winemakers, but it’s getting more and more attention in South Africa. It’s a good thing too when there are tasty examples such as this one. Dark to look at, hints of dark chocolate on the nose and a flavour with soft tannins, plum and more-ish fullness. A great option if you want a change from Pinotage. Or to mope after a long day.

Price: Around R90 a bottle

Villiera MCC Brut Rosé

I know that reviewed this before, but it’s too good not to. I’ve lost count of how many times this delightful bubbly has perked up a droll day. Produced especially for Woolies, it’s just R89.95 a bottle (far cheaper than Valium, what a win!).

It’s everything you want from a great MCC: creamy bubbles, fresh, strawberry flavours and that indescribable feeling of zippy elation.

Price: R89.95 a bottle from Woolies
