Wines for stormy weather

As I’m writing this, my cat is hiding under the bed and rain is smashing down from the heavens. Cape Town is in the midst of a glorious storm and I’m just about ready to enjoy a glass of red wine and put on my slippers. On that note, here are two reds that caught my eye in the past month and would be ideal to enjoy on a dramatic evening like this.

I do love a supermarket bargain and the Hartenberg Alchemy doesn’t disappoint.  As the name suggests, it’s a blend (Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz) that comes to very pleasingly. Lush and fruity, this wine will suit many tastes and budgets.

raatsThe Intriguing Red: Raats Family Red Jasper 2014

Raats Family Wines are big news at the moment and deservedly so. This Stellenbosch wine farm is producing some of the most interesting Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc at the moment – acclaimed wine writer Neal Martin even scored their wines between 89 and a whopping 95 in The Wine Advocate, a hugely influential publication.

The Red Jasper 2014 is blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 6% Merlot and 2% Malbec. It’s quite something to drink: dark berries, a slight mintiness and a marvelous silky feel. The perfect thing to serve with a slow cooked stew on a chilly evening.

Price: Around R190 a bottle
