WINE magazine have replaced their magnum of Dom Pérignon as reward for best letter to the editor with three litres of Kanonkop. Is this inflation, recognition of Kanonkop as dinkum local icon after the stellar performance of sales of Black Label or a retreat from cultural cringe? Will it have any effect on quality or quantity of letters?

Distell’s dashing laatjie in London, De Bruin Steenkamp, is back in Stellenbosch as new manager of the Nederburg Auction. A corporate golden boy, the move is a clear vote of confidence in the future of the institution. Let’s hope the public will be allowed to bid this year – this is, after all, a major reason for the success of the Cape Winemakers’ Guild Auction.

The Cape Wine Academy web site lists Meryl Weaver’s CWM assignment as “The emergence of vine vultivation in vooler-vlimate viticulture areas in South Africa with specific reference to Elim and Elgin.”

Was that Pieter Ferreira spotted slumming it on the Queen Mary II between Durban and Cape Town last week? Let’s hope Graham Beck plans to commercialize their ice cream made from MCC.
