Why? Friday lunch at the Troyeville Hotel featured two Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz blends from relatively unknown appellations: Bergwater in Prince Albert and this Goose Wines Expression from the Upper Langkloof Valley behind the Outeniqua Mountains and the bucolic pleasures of the Garden Route.

The country’s foremost fine art curators were our tasters: Stefan Hundt who assembled the Sanlam Collection and Ricky Burnett whose BMW Tributaries exhibition put Jackson Hlongwane on the map in the mid eighties. Stefan immediately plumped for the dikvoet charms of the Bergwater while Ricky was seduced by the polished tannins and velvet mouthfeel of the Goose. That his choice costs six times Stefan’s is no surprise.
