Best Bloody Marys and Bloggers in Town

Jan and Anel, the boggers behind Winetimes, Spit or Swallow and much more besides (below), leave their Buitenkant HQ every Monday while their char gives the place the once over. Appearances need to be kept up, as they’re located opposite gentlemen’s club Mavericks, who have just hired a Johannesburg Wine Lizard as columnist.

His most recent offering focuses on the role of cork in sex toys. Amazing how the over sixties get their jollies these days. So office-less for a morning, Jan and Anel head down to Twankey’s, a whale-free zone in the Taj Hotel, which becomes blogger central for the day.

For Twankey’s boasts the fastest WiFi in the city and the price is right – free. As is the popcorn bar snack. They also do “the best bloody Mary’s in town” according to Anel, who is no neophyte and who takes hers with Chili. Anel is off to OverHex in Worcester on Wednesday to provide social media training as the pair are the most progressive bloggers in the Winelands,

Winetimes has taken over from Kevin Kidson’s www.wine.co.za which has slumped back into a sullen advertorial depository and jungle gym for trolls after a few shining years on the leading edge of wine commentary, started by Lesley Beake. On Friday, it’s a field trip to Riebeek-Kasteel in the Swartland, to commune with Zakkie Bester and taste authentic Swartland wines that do not cost a King’s ransom.  Or a Queen’s either, depending on your proclivities.
