Best Value White Blends

Versus shook up the SA wine scene when it popped up in a 1.5 litre bottle many moons ago. Hats off to Stellenbosch Vineyards for keeping their Versus White in the top five best value white blends tasted in last year’s Best Value Guide. Likewise, KWV continue to over-deliver in the white department with their valueful Concordia 2012.

Saint Vincent is in poll position in a case of Divine Intervention while Slanghoek flies the flag high for the Breedekloof. As we process these tasting results, some names keep popping up. Knorhoek is one. Could Hansie van Niekerk be the best all-round value producer in SA?

Only 16 wines were submitted to the tasting, which is a pity as white blends are the workhorse of the SA wine scene. Where was Graça and the bag-in-a-box brigade? I think producers would be pleasantly surprised to challenge the brands who make all the running in the lifestyle pages of glossy magazines.
