“I’d rather be in bed with you” comes out as “I’d rather be in Bedfordview” when overheard through a locked bathroom door, which happened to me at a dinner party in Brixton many moons ago. The artist Gunther Herbst and Jackie had colonized Carl Landsberg’s bathroom for the duration and the rest of the dinner party were reduced to eves’ droppers. So how ironic to end up at Adega restaurant in Bedfordview with little prospect of bed this evening with a party of Lisbon winemakers.

There was the usual hysteria of a wine tasting in a foreign city: a hotel with no towels. R60 on MaxiTaxi for a 1 Km ride back to the hotel (it was raining). Why does SA do tourism so badly? The food at Adega was delicious

and tomorrow we bring the whole shooting match down to Cape Town for a rendezvous with SA winemakers and the trade at the Table Bay Hotel.
