Liam, the food lovers' luvvie

There can no longer be any doubt that Liam Tomlin (below) has taken over from Luke Dale Roberts as the foodie’s luvvie after his star turn in the Weekend Financial Times today. Nicholas Lander, aka Mr. Jancis Robinson, was recently in town with his wife who seriously underwhelmed at the Vinpro Information Day briefing at the CTICC. While JR is burbling on about Swiss wine today, Nick gets to the point with a review of Cape Town food.

He ticks all the trendy boxes: The Twelve Apostles (where WOSA put them up and thank heavens they weren’t “coloured” as they call black people in the UK after the recent “restaurant full fiasco”), Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants, Jason Bakery, Sababa and Chefs Warehouse Canteen (sic).

It is the last named that makes all the running, even if the sub-editor has a bitchy fit, featuring the comment “This is South Africa, after all, where appetites are large and portion sizes have to be too” as a slug. Oh come off it, you colonial twerp. What patronizing drivel.

Watch out for Liam as Eat Out’s chef of the year. And this time his restaurant will have been open for over a year. I love the place.
