The Pendock Wine Gallery @ Taj is an oasis of power in a dark continent thanks to the smart move of siting our premises on the same electricity grid as parliament. So while freshly harvested grapes oxidize without refrigeration in the powerless winelands, at least the wines already made and nestling sweetly in our humming bar fridge are Eskom proof. Which could explain our huge turnout last night at the opening of our February exhibition which features six top performing wines from last year’s weekly RECM Best Value tastings.
Will these be the last SA wines made in the age of electricity? Is SA wine destined to turn the clock back three centuries to the days of horse and candle power?
While this would certainly please the more radical biodynamic brethren, consumers used to the fresh and clean flavours will have to switch to imports made in the first world where electricity is the norm.
