SA Investment Wine

Interesting selection of local investment wines by Roland Peens from Wine Cellar on Moneyweb this morning.

“Peens top five investment wines from the currant (sic) vintage are:”

–          Klein Constantia Vin de Constance

–          Sadie Family Columella

–          Boekehoutskloof Syrah

–          Meerlust Rubicon

–          Kanonkop Pinotage

Do I agree? Up to a point, Lord Copper. I’d keep the Kanonkop but upgrade it to Black Label and replace the Boekenhoutskloof with De Toren Fusion V which is a terroir wine from Stellenbosch as opposed to a construct of terroir by truck. Besides, Boekenhoutskloof is part of the Reg Lascaris empire and his whole Diners club/Platter edifice is looking decidedly wobbly with SA’s top achiever at blind tastings, KWV, refusing to let its wines be assessed by the guide. Long term investment status is not likely.

I’d reluctantly dump the KC as sugar is even more out of favour that Isis these days, but the whole Sadie Family can stay as Eben is on another level. A Manson Family for hedonists and with better hair. Meerlust Rubicon is a dinkum national treasure so is safe and the Etienne le Riche Cabernet gets a berth on quality considerations.

My fifth spot goes to the Nebukadnesar from Babylonstoren as its owned by billionaire Chinese internet mogul Koos Bekker and they take these things seriously in China.
