Bottle of the Week: Unfiltered Fleur du Cap Chenin Blanc

At least Times Live got the headline right yesterday: A Chenin with notes of Nirvana. 24 hours later, the body text was still Les Sweidan’s High Road Bordeaux blend. Here is the column the hard copy got right.

Bottle of the Week: Fleur du Cape Unfiltered Chenin Blanc 2014

How much and where? R115 from www.vinoteque.co.za; R108 in the analogue world

Why? The wine world analogue of an MTV unplugged music video is an unfiltered wine. Minimal intervention is the style with no amplification from toasted oak barrels or synthesized harmonies from mico-oxygenation machines. This is such a wine fashioned from grapes grown in two appellations.

Maritime Darling gives acid freshness and green peach tangs while mountainous Paarl supplies palate weight and honied richness. Certainly the best Chenin to hit my chops this year and confirmation that when large corporates want to do a thing well, they have the wherewithall to do so. Buy a case to lay down.

Made by a dynamic young winemaking team, Fleur du Cap is fast becoming the pick of the crop for consumers keen on reliable quality at a realistic price.
