So we bunked the afternoon of the first day of the conference at ESA, the European Space Agency, for a wine tasting next door to the Pope’s summer residence at Castel Gandolfo. We saw no sign of a Pope – even though there are now two – nor Gandalf the Grey, either. We looked all over the wine cellar, too.

The closest we came to celebrity was a bottle signed by Justin Timberlake. Oh, and Keanu Reeves was the screensaver of the till.

The wines were fab with my favourite a 2004 vintage Aglianico from Campania, the appellation next door to Frascati.

The lake was awesome, too. The collapsed caldera of a volcano, it shows just how powerful were the Popes of medieval times, getting a volcano to do the earth moving for your holiday home.
