My optimistic organ turns the weekly spotlight of critical acclaim on a Solms Delta white that’s being discounted by GetWine.

Rocket blasts off

Solms Delta Amalie 2013

How much and where?

R59; www.getwine.co.za

Why? Solms Delta sounds like a rocket and the wines from this historic Franschhoek property blasted empowerment winemaking into the stratosphere a decade ago.

Aimed by pyschoanalyst Mark Solms and philanthropist Richard Astor, the top end of the range targets sophisticated palates.

This white blend of grenache blanc, chenin blanc, roussanne and viognier may be made of grapes you’ve never heard of, but the flavours are familiar.

It is named after Princess Amalie von Solms-Braunfels, who was painted by Rembrandt 20 years before the Dutch founded a revictualling station at the Cape.

It’s almost embarrassing to report it is being discounted by Johan Wegner at GetWine. Down from R115 to R59 . But the blue label is pure Delft and your guests will never twig . Just the drop for the last season of Downton Abbey , bridge or a Roedean book club. Best drunk in a crystal glass with the pinkie fully extended. (Signet ring optional ).
