An Oscar of a wine

Talk about bad timing. On the day Oscar Pistorius is sent down for six years for murder (a whole 12 months more than his sentence for manslaughter) I’m recommending Beyerskloof Traildust is Thicker than Blood 2014 in my tiny organ.

Why? Called “Traildust is Thicker than Blood” after the immortal quote by Western writer Louis L’Amour, this Stellenbosch blend of pinotage, pinot noir and cinsault has a hint of the iron you taste when you bite your tongue.

In addition to metallic minerality there is opulent red and blackberry fruit, which goes down well with roast duck in a plum sauce.

This wine is destined to become a national treasure, like Meerlust Rubicon or the Paul Sauer from Kanonkop, as it has impeccable genetic credentials.

It’s the brainchild of Beyers Truter, who has done more to popularise meaty wines that taste of blood than Dracula.
