Accentuate the Positive

In these days of threatened credit downgrades and general social gloom, Douglas Green Junior is an example to us all. The man is irrepressably positive. Last night at 47 Bree Street he was raising a glass to the renaissance of Sherry and he’s doing more than most to make it happen.

He drinks it everyday and his eponymous wine company has imported three from the Sherry triangle in Spain, one for each vertex. Sort of like the Golden Triangle of the Helderberg but with more olé and !!! written upside down.

While anoraks were sent into a tailspin by the observation that the #1 was sweeter than the #2, I was a little nonplussed. For in Boksburg, both are what you do in the privacy of a lavatory and are certainly not something to be discussed with ladies present.

Especially when they are wearing dynamite black heels which they know how to use. Although castanets were in short supply among Flamenco dancers at the launch of the Sherries last night. So before a fino is imported, the Spanish Chamber of Commerce should send to Madrid for castanets. After all, if most of our Hout Bay hake ends up in Seville, its only fair that Cape Town should score some castanets after someone broke the municipal vuvuzela.

My favourite was the #2, which is a benchmark of that nutty, orange peel that has made Sherry one of the classic wines of the world. With Cape Town eateries nothing if not eclectic, this well-priced addition to the restauarnt wine list is sure to be a winner.
