Bespoke Bordeaux

The slickest writer on the Weekend Financial Times is Sir David Tang. As agony uncle, he’s answered (in print) several of my emails concerned with how SA can improve wine sales in the Middle Kingdom. The first was a reaction to one of the many snaffus by WOSA dominatrix and former Queen of SA Wine, Su(e) Birch, was said China was the last place she’d visit on holiday. What a muppet.

After July’s launch of Tangram, the fantastic Bordeaux Blend from Durbanville Hills, I fired this email.

Dear Sir Tang

A wine producer of our parish, Durbanville Hills, has launched a Bordeaux-style blend called Tangram. As the classic Bordeaux recipe calls for 5 varietals and the Chinese puzzle consists of 7 tangs, the choice of name sounds like a transparent attempt to bring this brand to your attention. Would you ever drink a South African Bordeaux-inspired red?
Best wishes

Certainly Luvo Ntezo from the One & Only likes the stuff and we write about it today in the City Press.

Luan and I lunched yesterday at Il Leone, best Italian in De Waterkant by a country mile. A bottle of Webersburg 2013 confirms that the Helderberg remains the St. Emillion of SA. A seamless blend of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon, this is exactly the kind of Bespoke BordeauxTM we’ll be showcasing at The Stack over a series of dinners. The Stack is a gentleman’s club one street behind and a thousand miles ahead of the Mount Nelson.
