Exceptional 2012 Pomerols from JP Moueix

Bordeaux 2013 has been reported as the toughest vintage in 30 years and a handful of châteaux will not release a 2013. With the small crop and worldwide Bordeaux appetite, we are unlikely to see any price reductions, making the 2012 Pomerols look ever-more attractive.

We are therefore delighted to have just been appointed agents of JP Moueix. Once owners of Château Petrus, their current properties comprise THE top Pomerol estates. And as these are offered direct from each château, they are well below market price. Trotanoy, for instance, is over R3000 on the open market.

As Pomerol was harvested under perfect conditions, it was the most successful commune in 2012. Parker describes it as ‘excellent’ and many of the wines are on par, or better, than their far pricier 2010 and 2009s.

There are only a few cases each of these available, so please send through your order promptly. As per all our en-primeur offers, VAT and shipping will be charged on landing in 2015.

Chateau Lafleur

Robert Parker’s tasting notes

Château Latour a Pomerol 2012
A beautiful bouquet of sweet black currants, cedar wood, licorice, truffles and kirsch soars from this dense ruby/plum/purple-colored 2012. Round and generously endowed with medium to full body, sweet tannin and an endearing, seductive style, this blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc should keep for 12-15 years.

Château Certan de May, Pomerol 2012
Round and easygoing with sweet tannin and early accessibility, the precociously formed 2012 Certan de May exhibits notes of bay leaves, black currants, black cherries and underbrush. Ripe and medium-bodied, it is made somewhat in the style of Latour a Pomerol, but slightly more herbaceous. I liked it for its depth, richness and early drinkability. Consume it over the next 10-12+ years.

Pensées de Lafleur, Pomerol 2012
The second wine, the 2012 Les Pensees de Lafleur (about one-half the entire production), is a blend of 54% Merlot and 46% Cabernet Franc. It is a mid-weight, delicate wine displaying hints of sweet cherries, plums, licorice, wet gravel and earth. This supple, medium-bodied, pleasant offering should easily drink well for 10-15+ years.

Château Hosanna, Pomerol
Hosanna’s dense ruby/purple color is followed by a floral, black raspberry, black currant, mulberry, Christmas fruitcake and licorice-scented bouquet. Full-bodied (especially for a 2012 as well as a Pomerol), rich, concentrated and strikingly pure, it combines great finesse/elegance with power and substance. It should drink well when released and age nicely for two decades or more.

Château Lafleur-Pétrus, Pomerol 2012
The stunning 2012 La Fleur Petrus clearly merits its striking moniker. A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, it offers a dense purple color along with a big, sweet kiss of mulberry jam intermixed with black cherries, raspberries and even blacker fruits as well as a subtle touch of oak. The wine is full, rich, concentrated and moderately tannic. It is nearly as good as the 2010 and 2009. However, some structural tannins suggest 4-5 years of bottle age will be warranted, and the wine is capable of lasting a quarter of a century.

Château Trotanoy, Pomerol 2012
The blockbuster 2012 Trotanoy has more in common with the 2009 or 2010 than most 2012s do. It stands as an example of just how successful Pomerol was in 2012. A dense black/purple color is followed by a bouquet of minerals/crushed rocks, powerful, intense black currant, licorice, roasted meat, barbecue and truffle notes. Full-bodied and super-concentrated, it is an amazing tour de force in this irregular as well as challenging vintage. Trotanoy’s 2012 should be on every connoisseur’s buying list. It will require 5-8 years of cellaring when released, and should keep for 25-30 years, one of the longest-lived wines of the vintage.

Château Lafleur, Pomerol 2012
Reminiscent of the 2001 Lafleur, the 2012 is supple and elegant as well as impressively pure, textured and medium-bodied, with sensual kirsch-like fruit intermixed with loamy soil, licorice and incense notes. While not particularly powerful, it possesses a deep ruby color with purple nuances, and is stunningly pure with no hard edges. This 2012 will be drinking well by age 5 or 6 (atypical for a young Lafleur), and should keep for 15 or more.
