The Esther Knewitz Memorial Scholarship, which every year provides the opportunity for a young Australian winemaker to be part of a winery exchange to Germany, is officially open.

The idea behind the scholarship is to keep Esther Knewxitz’s memory alive and support young people in the Australian wine industry who have the same zest for life and community spirit. Esther was an Oenology student at Geisenheim University, Germany, and during her holidays in 2004 she came to Australia to gain work experience for the vintage season. Sadly she died in a motor vehicle accident when she was just 24 years old.

The scholarship is aimed at Australian winemaking students or young graduates who are interested in getting work experience in Germany. Applicants must have winery experience and be passionate about a continuing career in the wine industry.

The program is of approximately 10 weeks’ duration from September to November and the successful applicant will win the opportunity to be employed at a high-profile winery in Germany, and will also receive return airfares, all visa fees, plus $1,000 spending money.

All applications will be judged by Anne and Horst Knewitz, Esther’s parents; Philipp Maurer, winemaker at Reh-Kendermann in Germany; and Sue Caloghiris, CEO of Bibber International.

All the information about the application process can be found at the Bibber International website www.bibber.com.au

The due date for applications is 2 May and the successful applicant will be announced on Monday 9 June, which was Esther’s birthday.
