Rock out with your cork out

There’s an old saying that if you want to make a million dollars in the winemaking business, it’s easy — just start with $4 million! That’s not entirely true as you might end up with nothing.

It’s not very surprisingly to see that many in the entertainment, and particularly the music, industry have branched out into winemaking. They have the cash to flash after all.

Today we take a look at some celebrities who ventured into the winemaking business and what they charge for their very own tipple.

Dave Matthews

You may have to travel to Virginia to find Mr. Matthews’ juice. The property he owns is called Blenheim Vineyards and a good bottle to try is the fragrant 2010 Viognier priced at $19. (R135)

Train

Remember their song  “Hey, Soul Sister”? The band recently released a 2009 Drops of Jupiter Petite Sirah for $10 (R70). Some of the proceeds from the wine support Family House, a non-profit that helps families with seriously ill children. A reason to drink for a good cause!

Carlos Santana

It’s a bit unclear what exactly Carlos Santana’s role is in making the Mumm Napa Valley Santana Brut $45 (R320). Perhaps he simply ponders it onstage while reeling off those signature guitar solos, or perhaps he’s in the winery lab every day analyzing juice samples with safety goggles on – it’s a bit of a mystery. Regardless, this is a tasty sparkling wine, and a portion of its proceeds benefit Santana’s Milagro Foundation, which helps needy children around the world. Another good reason to drink!
