This month saw the unveiling of John Platter’s 2018 Wine Guide and once again, Constantia Uitsig is delighted with the ratings bestowed on the estate, as well as the valley at large.

In the words of our friends from Port2Port:

“The (Platter’s) Guide is to South African Wine, what Lonely Planet is to travel.”

Indeed, in an attempt to assemble a local version of Hugh Johnson’s ground-breaking Pocket Wine Book, John and Erica Platter embarked on a brave adventure in 1980. Today, nearly 4 decades later, the Guide features 941 South African wine producers, merchants and brands – collectively adding up to a total of over 8,000 locally produced wines.

The guide’s wine descriptions and star ratings are compiled by a team of leading wine experts. The iconic 5 star rating denotes exceptional bottlings which are identified by individual tasters and then also emerge from a second round of blind tastings (without sight of the label), still with the judges’ highest rating (95 points or more).

The latest Guide crowned a total of 111 wines with five stars. Out of this total, only 3 Semillons were awarded the honour, one of which, being our very own Constantia Uitsig Semillon!

Publisher of Platter’s by Diners Club, Jean-Pierre Rossouw, says: “As per last year, all wines that were scored 4.5 stars (90 points) or higher in the primary assessment went into a second round of tasting, conducted blind (without sight of the label) by small panels including experienced palates from outside the team. The high number of Five Stars is testament to ever-improving wine-making, aided in no small part by the exceptional quality of the highly regarded 2015 and 2017 vintages. Hearty congratulations to all winners!”

In addition to our five star Semillon, our MCC continues to bubble to the top – achieving a note-worthy 4.5 stars.
