Simple steps to ordering the right wine when dining out

One of the most common questions I am asked is what wine to choose when dining out with friends.

“I’m going out with some friends Saturday night and I know I’ll be asked to pick the wine,” a reader recently asked me. “Tell me what wine to buy.”

I wish it were that easy, but it need not be a terrifying experience.

Unfortunately, there are numerous variables that factor into the answer to this question. If you are in the position of choosing wine for your next outing with friends, there are a few key things to consider.

At what restaurant will you be dining? What type of food will you and your friends be eating? With whom will you be dining and what types of wines do you and your friends enjoy?

First, let’s consider the restaurant. Some restaurants clearly put more emphasis on wine than others. These dining establishments — typically higher-end spots — may offer an extensive wine list encompassing wines at various price points.

There may also be a knowledgeable sommelier, or wine steward, on staff; if so, take advantage of that person’s expertise. Quite often, the sommelier has been extensively involved in selecting the wines the restaurant serves, and is generally knowledgeable about the restaurant’s cuisine. Because of this knowledge, a good sommelier will be able to offer — after quizzing your dining party about a few things — some great wine recommendations.
