Solms-Delta plants first Macabeau in SA

The only Macabeau vines to be planted in South Africa have recently found their home at Solms-Delta.Macabeau (also known as Viura in Spain) was found in South Africa in earlier history, but all the vines died out. It is now mostly planted in France and Spain, but is highly suitable to our Climate here in Franschhoek.

Our viticulturist, Rosa Kruger, and vineyard manager, Francois Vermeulen, specially sourced virus free vines from France that have recently been planted on Solms-Delta in a goblet system, which is a very traditional system for this variety. This high-yielding grape will resort to green harvesting when eventually in production, to control quality. This variety adds texture and provides good resistance to oxidation and the wine produced is destined for our Solms-Delta Amalie blend.

We are very fortunate and very proud to be the “first producers” of this varietal in South Africa.
