Something a bit pongy at the Cheese Festival?!

“Welcome to the Cheese Festival.”

Well apparently not for many smaller producers this year! An interesting chat with a cheese stockist over lunch has produced more intrigue than the wine world – can this indeed be possible?? But surprisingly, in very similar ways!

So first up – the show itself isn’t cancelled and is still going on. However, the venue has been moved – sorry for you Franschhoek – to Stellenbosch and according to information I have received, many smaller producers and retailers won’t be attending this year. Why not? Well, here’s a couple of facts for you first:

  • Did you know that 80% of the cheese eaten in South Africa is eaten in the Western Cape?
  • And of that 80%, a further 80%+ is anonymous Gouda/Cheddar/Edam sold as ‘loaf cheese’, dyed a prurient orange and worthy only to be used as bicycle-tyre fixing material if you run out of rubber?
