South Africa ranked 4th largest Tequila and Mezcal market in the world

Based on data by Euromonitor International, South Africa is one of the top 5 Tequila and Mezcal markets in the world.

Positioned in the fourth spot, sales of the spirits in the country reached 3.2 million litres in 2012, beating Germany by 200 000 litres.

South Africa’s growing middle class means that it has gained promised land status in the eyes of spirits producers, according to a report by The Spirits Business.

Western spirits are gaining in prominence in the country, and it seems that Tequila and Mezcal’s patterns of premiumisation mirrors the direction South African consumer preferences are heading.

Other countries on the list include Russia (3.7 million litres), Mexico (93.1 million liters), and United States (113.7 million litres).
