Looking for something to put fire in your belly when the temperature drops?
Tea, coffee and hot chocolate spring to mind, but sometimes you need a little something that gets right to your core. When you really need a boost of warmth from the inside a glühwein, or mulled wine, is the only way forward.
Many people look at glühwein as an laughably excuse to serve cheap wine to unfortunate guests. This is however not the case. Back in the day glühwein was originally designed to show off the wealth and generosity of a medieval household.
These days many pre-mulled, just-heat-it-up versions are available for sale, yet homemade glühwein wine is so easy to make, I urge you to give it a try.
For the wine, I suggest you use a bottle of Lookout Red from Leopard’s Leap.
Ingredients
750 ml Leopard’s Leap Lookout Red (available from most retail outlets countrywide)
75 ml sugar
50 ml lemon juice
150 ml orange juice
Cinnamon stick
6 – 8 cloves
Garnish
Cinnamon sugar on the rim of the glass.
Method
Mix all the ingredients in a small saucepan until just before boiling point.
Strain into a clean bowl.
Serve warm.
