Spotlight on Broad Valley Wines

The story of Broad Valley wines could come straight out of a wine-lover’s fairy tale. With corporate careers spanning 30 years, the Kretzmars decided it was time for a country getaway for family and friends, but they ended up doing much more than that! The couple restored a rundown farm in the Klein River Valley to its natural glory, rich with indigenous vegetation, and are now producing highly acclaimed wines and olive oil.

This careful attention to terroir and respect for the natural dynamics of the region are evident in their wines and the striking packaging of the new Broad Valley Extra Virgin Oil.

Broad Valley Wines Pinot Noir 2014 – R195.00 per bottle

This maiden vintage from the cool climate region of Broad Valley Farm when combined with the clay and sandstone soils and deep clay substrata, has produced a classically styled Pinot Noir, despite the relatively young vineyards.

The wine is expected to develop more complexity and body over time and should be drinking well for the next eight years.

This wine has herbaceous undertones on the palate with rich forest floor and fruity spice flavours and a savoury finish. Integrated oak tannins stand up well to the expressive and dark ripe red fruit.

Serving suggestion: Decant for up to two hours before serving, serve at 18°C in deep bowled Burgundian stemware.

Food pairing: Will pair well with fillet tagliata, grilled veal with lemon and olive oil, or game dishes with savoury flavours

Broad Valley Wines Pinot Noir 2015 – R215.00 per bottle

This is the second vintage from Broad Valley Farm which is in a cool climate region with clay and sandstone soils and a deep clay substratum. Fuller than the maiden 2014 vintage, this wine appears ripe on the palate with smoky, nutmeg aromas on the nose. Juicy black cherry and cassis flavours combine with rustic gamy undertones to deliver a poised and bright finish. The wine is bright and complex and will drink well for the next six to seven years.

This second vintage has similar integrated oak tannins to the maiden 2014 vintage but with a more prominent nose and palate with riper fruit flavours at its core.

Serving suggestion: Decant for up to two hours before serving, serve at 18°C in deep bowled Burgundian stemware.

Food pairing: Will pair well with charcuterie, flavoured duck or grilled tuna.
