Steenberg launches new range of wines named after three tall ships

Steenberg Vineyards has introduced three new wines to its portfolio. Named after three tall ships in the Royal Navy fleet that defeated the Dutch in the Battle of Muizenberg in 1795, the new additions include a Rosé, Chardonnay and Cabernet/Shiraz blend.

Setting sail for the first British occupation of the Cape of Good Hope, the Ruby, Stately and Sphynx were part of the fleet that advanced on Dutch strongholds in Muizenberg on 7 August. Skirmishes ensued as the Dutch retreated including clashes on the Steenberg foothills.

Reminiscent of this short-lived yet historically significant battle, their namesakes stand tall today as a distinctive collection of Steenberg wines set apart by their rose gold capsules and filigree trim.

Steenberg Ruby Rosé 2017 is sourced from a blend of the Western Cape’s preeminent wine regions. The Syrah grapes hail from the farm in Constantia as well as from a beautiful ridge in Robertson, whilst the Cinsault grapes were sourced from a special site of old bush vines in the heart of Stellenbosch and the Swartland. Salmon pink in colour, the Ruby Rosé opens with delicate aromas of watermelon, ripe sweet melon, and hints of rose petal. The palate offers a lush mouthfeel with flavors of stone fruit and strawberry with a cool minerality on the finish.

Steenberg Sphynx Chardonnay 2017 is a lightly barrel-fermented Chardonnay that stems from specially selected vineyards in Robertson and Bonnievale. The palate has a very enjoyable texture and coats the mouth with smooth creaminess, leading to flavours of dried yellow apples, quince and pear. All finishing off with bright acidity which leaves your palate clean and fresh.

Steenberg Stately 2015 is a generous blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (63%) and Shiraz (37%). You will get some liquorice and earthiness on the nose, with a finish that is big with lingering blackberry flavours. This bottle is a steal considering how expensive South African red blends of this quality tend to get.
