Tamatiebredie On A Budget

As the COVID19 pandemic continues to affect our livelihoods many of us are under immense financial strain during this unusual time.

Cut costs in the kitchen with this big-batch traditional South African stew. With just a few pantry staples, this recipe comes together quickly, serves about 8 and overdelivers on taste and flavour.

Ingredients

  • 1kg of mutton or lamb piece
  • flour for coating
  • 2 small tins tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • salt
  • black pepper

Instructions

  1. Coat the mutton or lamb pieces with some flour and fry the piece in a heavy-bottom pot in a bit of oil on stovetop until brown.
  2. Add the onion to the lamb and fry until fragrant.
  3. Turn down the heat to medium-low.
  4. Mix the tomato paste with the sugar and add to the lamb. Mix well, cover pot and cook on low for 30 minutes.
  5. Once the meat is soft, flavour with a lot of black pepper and salt and serve with white rice, polenta or pap.
