Taste Lanzerac’s famous Pinotage at “We Love Wine” Festival this weekend

There are few things closer to the South African heart than quality biltong and dried wors, as well as a full-bodied glass of our home grown varietal, Pinotage. At the We Love Wine @ Cape Gate Festival on Friday, 22 August from 17h00-21h00 and Saturday, 23 August from 12h00-18h00, visitors can indulge in both. “Everything goes with biltong, even sea water, but Pinotage works best”, says Lanzerac Marketing Manager, Adinda Booysen.

Lanzerac, who produces outstanding examples of our local grape PINOTAGE, paired with some interestingly spiced biltong like lemon and lime, sweet chilli and traditional, courtesy of Joubert & Monty, will be an interesting exercise for festival visitors.

The Lanzerac Premium Pinotage 2012 has an excellent, deep colour with ripe berries and plums on the nose and a palate with a good mouth feel and lingering aftertaste. With 8 years maturation it will start to acquire the velvet density and luxurious chocolate and caramel flavours of its very early predecessors. It is a full bodied, complex wine with a beautiful fruit/wood balance and a good tannin structure that will allow the wine to age extremely well.

From the Lanzerac Heritage range comes the Pionier Pinotage 2011. This wine is a tribute to the world’s first bottled Pinotage, a 1959 vintage from the Lanzerac label and it is also a tribute to the Father and Pioneer of Pinotage, Prof Perold who created our beloved Pinotage grape from Cinsaut and Hermitage in 1925. Perold was attempting to combine the best qualities of the robust Hermitage with Pinot noir, a grape that makes great wine but can be difficult to grow. Only 4 barrels of Pionier Pinotage was made by Cellar Master, Wynand Lategan. “The grapes for the Pionier comes from a single vineyard block, less than 2.5 hectares in size. The vines are 18 years old now and the yield relatively low, so this gives extra flavor and complexity to the wine. Only the best is good enough for Pionier”, says Wynand.

During the We Love Wine event wine lovers can taste and buy both the Premium and Pionier Pinotage to take home on the day, or you can place your order and they will deliver to your home.
