More than 15 years ago Royale Eatery on Long Street opened its doors to introduce Cape Town to the Gourmet Burger. At the time burgers in town were rather unassuming. A simple mass-produced beef patty stuck between a store-bought bun made up the majority of servings. It was a quick and cheap bite for people on the go.
But with the introduction of the gourmet burger patrons discovered new unheard-of toppings and combinations. All of a sudden you had to sit down with a knife and fork to devour a little burger tower.
Fast forward to present day and here we are, at mount meat.
6. Build Your Own
Rocomamas Build-Your-Own burger might not qualify as a standard offering but it demands a mention nevertheless. Since the Spur Group started rolling out their wildly successfully Rocomamas chain, burger enthusiasts flocked to it with the hope to create the ultimate burger and some of the creations are nothing short of insane.

Known as the rulers of BBQ ribs in Cape Town, Sticky BBQ’s burgers are sometimes overlooked. However, their burger ensemble is impressive with the popular OMG Burger probably leading the pack but its The Monster Burger that towers above most. It’s the biggy with the itsy bitsy price tag!

4. Holy Macaroni Burger
The smallest, but definitely the craziest burger on this list. This 100% grass-fed Frankie Fenner patty with caramelized onions between two cheesy macaroni buns from Holy Smoke’s is any carb-lovers wildest foodporn fantasy.
But be warned, the Holy Macaroni packs serious weight and will hit the bottom of your gut like a cannonball, all poised for a rather spectacular explosion, come loo time.

3. Diablo Burger
The devil is in the details meat. This is the epic Diablo, one of the best-sellers, any day of the week, at Dos Chido Mexican BBQ in Durbanville. It’s a meat extravaganza with a massive 500g organic beef offering, complete with Old Nick’s favourite snack – bacon – and covered with the gooiest of melted cheese. Sinfully delicious!

2. The Chubby
The Chubby Burger has become something of a Cape Town legend.
Devour this six beef patty burger with bacon, cheese, jalapenos, fries and all the trimmings in less than 10 minutes and get your name listed on the wall of fame and the burger is free!

1. The Goliath Tsek Burger
With its own gravitational pull, The Goliath Tsek Burger dwarfs everything in the known burger universe. It’s the colossal daddy of The Grillfather’s famous Tsek Burger and feeds a small village of about 40 to 50 people.
