Get A Taste Of The Award-Winning Wines Of Boschendal

This year has certainly been one which will be remembered for many years to come – and as much as we acknowledge the challenges, we also believe in the importance of celebrating moments of joy and accomplishment. Boschendal has been fortunate to have created some of these special moments in 2020 – with many awards and accolades to remind us of the reward of passion, hard work and dedication. Most recently, Platter’s Wine Guide awarded no less than four of our wines with 4.5 stars in the 2021 report.  With a 335-year legacy in winemaking, you’ll be forgiven for wanting to add more than just one of our highly acclaimed vintages to your wine cellar.

Our year of excellence spans both national and international arenas, with the following just a taste of why Boschendal Wines holds a special position in the hearts and palates of wine connoisseurs around the world.

Heritage Heroes

Our Heritage Collection continues to take its place as the pinnacle of our winemaking. Black Angus, an evolution of the original estate blend (The Grand Reserve) is a carefully crafted blend of Shiraz, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. The result is a voluptuous, full-bodied wine of black cherry, plum, roasted cocoa bean, black pepper and winter spice – and the reason for its numerous wins at the Platter’s Wine Awards 2021 (4.5 stars), the Tim Atkin South Africa Report 2020 (90 points), the Prescient Signature Red Blend Report (Top 10) and the Mundus Vini Spring 2020 (Gold).  Our exquisite Vin d’Or (2018)  Noble Late Harvest earned 93 points at Platter’s and Gold at the Decanter Wine Awards 2020, respectively.

Cap Classiques popping with elegance

The perfect bubble takes time, precision and patience and  Jean Le Long Prestige Cuvée 2009 is the perfect example of this. Having garnered Gold once again at the Amorim Cap Classique Challenge and 93 points from Platter’s 2021, this vintage is only beginning its journey of excellence having been recently disgorged.  The delicate balance of pear, almond and crisp apple of the Grand Cuvée Brut (2014) also received Gold from the Michelangelo Awards.

Boschendal’s iconic Cap Classique Brut NV, which features a fresh citrus finish and brioche aromas, secured a Double Gold at the Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards as well as received 91 points in the Tim Atkin South Africa Report 2020.

Elgin Enchanted

Boschendal’s investment in the Cape Winelands’ Elgin Valley has been generous once again this year. Made in limited volumes, our Appellation Series wines capture the distinctive nuances of this exceptional terroir and are known for their elegance, finesse and complexity. Our most awarded wine vintage to vintage, Elgin Chardonnay (2018) was awarded 92, 93 and 94 points from IWSC 2020, the Prescient Chardonnay Report and the Tim Atkin South Africa Report 2020. This crafted Chardonnay…….

Red, red wine

Our 1685 range honours the rich heritage of our winery, with each wine presented in the very same bottle shape originally crafted on the estate generations ago. Multi-layered flavours of cherry plum and ripe mulberry balanced by subtle oak ageing is the signature of the 1685 Merlot (2017), which received Top 10 status in the Prescient Merlot Report. The 1685 Shiraz (2018), rich in flavours of dark berries, elegant spice and exotic oak with a lingering fruit expression, was also awarded top honours (90 points) by the Prescient Shiraz Report and Gold in the Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards. To top off an already excellent year for our reds, both our 2017 vintages of 1685 Cabernet Sauvignon were also recognised by the Prescient Cabernet Sauvignon Report.

Winsome Whites

Not to be outdone by the reds, our selection of 1685 white varietals from 2019 had a stellar year, too. The vivacious Chardonnay earned Platinum at the Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards and 90 points in the Tim Atkin South Africa Report 2020 – its rich citrus zest, cinnamon and nutmeg nose, and tropical fruit flavours are certainly deserving of such accolades. Joining the 1685 Chardonnay, the 1685 Sauvignon Blanc (2019) and Chardonnay Pinot Noir (2019) also earned Gold at the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon and Rosé Rocks, respectively.

The Future is Rosé

Rosés are exceptionally pleasing on the eye as well as the palate – and this is most certainly true of Boschendal’s exquisite range of Rosés. Our Brut NV Rosé, which earned 90 points at IWSC 2020, 91 points in the Tim Atkin South Africa Report 2020 and Gold at Rosé Rocks, is a delectable Cap Classique that can be enjoyed on its own or alongside summer salads and seafood. The refined Classics Rosé Garden Rose (2020), with its unique colour and succulent berry flavours (think strawberry, raspberry and mulberry) with a hint of spice, also garnered Gold at Rosé Rocks.

Brilliant Blends

A distinctive red blend, grounded in Bordeaux varietals and elevated by a layer of Shiraz for depth and intrigue, The Nicolas was always going to exceed expectations. According to wine aficionado Christian Eedes, who reviewed the wine at its launch, The Nicolas has the potential to become one of Boschendal’s iconic wines. This summation was certainly an indication of things to come with The Nicolas 2017 earning 93 points at the Platter’s Wine Awards 2021 and Gold in the Mundus Vini Spring 2020 results, as well as being honoured with 90 points in the Tim Atkin South Africa Report 2020 as well as voted in the Top Ten Red Blends by Prescient Signature Red Blends Report 2020.

Our Rose Gold

Rose gold elegance and sophistication in our Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2019 received Gold standards at the Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards this year. This finessed blend is the perfect complement to sushi, salads and a variety of Summer dishes. A hint of oak spice and voluptuous body makes it bliss to pair with food.
