These days wineries in South Africa are closing down on a weekly bases but luckily things are looking really green and prosperous in the Banghoek valley, nestled between Stellenbosch and Pniel.
I was introduced to the wines of Oldenburg over an indulging lunch at La Mouette in Sea Point a while back. For me it was love at first sip! The whole range offered exceptional quality and unbelievable value for money and I was therefore over the moon when I received an invite to attend the launch of their new tasting room.
Follow the beautiful path just of Helshoogte’s pass which will lead you to the end of the rainbow. Tucked away between the Jonkershoek and Franschhoek mountains you will find the new home of Oldenburg Vineyards. Seeing is believing as this place has so much to offer the eye.
The Cellar Door building is modern but rooted in it’s natural surroundings. Massive wooden beams form a central apex for the thatched roof and impressive African inspired art covers the walls of this spacious architectural masterpiece.
The cherry on the cake is however the view. It feels as if you are literally in the mountains. An absolute treat for the soul! It’s a dramatic and breathtaking welcome, and one which prepares you for the quality of the wines to come.
The Oldenburg Cellar Door glows with energy and beauty and one can see the pride in owner Adrian Vanderspuy’s eyes. He was born in this valley on the neighboring farm, Rainbow’s End and although he spend most of his life overseas, he’s heart has always been in Africa. Together with winemaker, Simon Thompson and the rest of the team at Oldenburg the wine estate is bound for great things. All the hard work and money that was put into this piece of land is paying off and we as consumers and winelovers are lucky enough to be part of this amazing journey.
The Oldenburg Vineyards Cellar Door is open for tastings Monday – Friday, 10h00 – 16h30 and on Sat & Public Holidays by appointment only. They are closed on Sundays. The tasting fee is R25 for tasting all 5 wines.
