The crowd pleaser – De Grendel MCC Brut

Just after the celebrated Amorim Tsogo Sun Cap Classique win for the De Grendel MCC Brut 2011, winemaker Elzette Du Preez popped another cork to celebrate victory at the Winemakers’ Choice Awards late in October. The De Grendel Brut 2011* not only took a diamond award in the MCC category, but also The Winemakers’ Choice MCC Trophy.

The Winemakers’ Choice Awards is a key competition in the South African wine industry.  The judging process is done by winemakers from all the wine regions in the country, essentially making these awards the only peer voted awards in South Africa. This exclusive achievement is only given to roughly 10% of the wines entered and identifies the best quality wines on show, putting them in a class of their own as the Winemakers’ Choice. The De Grendel MCC Brut is proving to be very popular this year and was listed in the Classic Wine Magazine’s annual Top 6 category tasting for white blends, receiving 4 stars at an awards dinner recently.

When winemaker Elzette du Preez got the opportunity to make a method cap classique at De Grendel, her eyes lit up, six years and six vintages  later, the De Grendel MCC Brut still has her smiling. “This is an extravagant wine in every sense of the word.” Says Elzette.
