The End Of Five Cherished Cape Town Restaurants. A Sign Of The Times.

Like Styles said: “It’s a sign of the times.”

As South Africa yet again slides into a recession, while the Rand tumbles downwards, restaurants in Cape Town fall by the wayside.

HQ

Almost a decade of steak and salad came to an end last month when HQ closed its doors. In a statement on the restaurant’s Facebook page, the venue hinted at a possible new location, but it’s unlikely.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that Jerry’s Burger Bar will move from its Park road venue to the old HQ premises on Heritage Square.

The Commissary

This fantasy dive in Shortmarket Street will end operations by the end of this month. The Commissary, part of the Luke Dale-Roberts kingdom – where food critics obey and palates rejoice – was the talk of the town when it opened two years ago. Fans raved about the tasty snacks and pseudo authentic interior.

The restaurant welcomes everyone for one last bite at their gourmet street food before it closes on the 31st of March.

Holy Smoke

Singing waiters and crazy burgers could not keep the smoke going. The East City haul, who for a brief time took over the throne as the Smoke Rulers of Cape Town from Lefty’s up the road, failed to attract enough carnivore junkies to the edge of town.

As of last month, the doors were boarded up. No official statement was released.

Riverine Rabbit

Riverine Rabbit will close shop on the 23rd of April. Over the last 18 months, this family-owned restaurant in the heart of town treated Capetonians to local sustainable delights, perfectly crafted by celebrated chef Ash Heeger.

Last month, Chef Ash announced that she will return to the UK and close Riverine Rabbit.

House of H

Now you see me, now you don’t. When chef Heinrich Koen first opened his uniquely South Africa meat palace in an old parking lot, Capetonians instantly loved it. Good meat, great salads, no more issues with split bills, what’s not to love?

And then without warning, on a foggy Cape Town morning, it was gone. Never to be seen again.
