The History of Tia Maria Coffee Liqueur

One of the best coffee cocktail ingredients on the planet still remains Tia Maria. A sweet liqueur with a strong coffee character and complex aromatic structure, there are three significant elements that characterise its flavour: Tia Maria coffee provides the distinctive roasted, full-bodied rich taste.

This heavenly elixir dates back to the mid-17th century, when a beautiful young aristocrat fled the turmoil that colonial war brought to the island of Jamaica. Her maid saved one family treasure – a small jewellery box with black pearl earrings and an ancient manuscript for a mysterious liqueur. This recipe was named Tia Maria.

After lying dormant for many years, it was later rediscovered by Dr. Kenneth Leigh Evans in the 1940’s, who began to produce and market it. Used in the very first Espresso Martini recipe over 40 years ago, Tia Maria became a choice ingredient for ardent coffee cocktail lovers worldwide.
