Sommeliers, producers and media mingled and networked at the gala event to announce the winners of the inaugural The Sommeliers Selection which was deemed a resounding success with almost 400 entries received. The results were announced on 19 June at the recently launched Open Door Restaurant at Constantia Uitsig.
Wineries ranging from large, small and niche took part in what has been described as ‘A New Wine Award With a Difference’, which also catered for beer, ciders and international wineries. A total of 101 wines were selected for the Sommeliers Selection Wine List, which was judged only by members of the South African Sommeliers Association (SASA). The judging panel was chaired by internationally acclaimed sommeliers David Clarke and Higgo Jacobs.
The focus of the competition was to keep it fresh, new, and different, but still retaining the serious aspect of wine, whilst guaranteeing the highest standard.

‘We found the overall standard of entries received above average with an excellent range of wines to work with and judge. We believe in the potential of a wine competition in this format and can’t wait to see consumers’ reaction and engagement with the awards, ‘ says Higgo Jacobs.
