Top 100 Wines competition rewards wine made from 116-year-old vineyard

Breedekloof – Consumers are advised to seek out wines by uniWines Vineyards’ Daschbosch wines, after five wines in their portfolio – one which is made from one of the oldest blocks of Muscat d’Alexandrie in South Africa – was singled out by wine judges, and awarded accordingly, in this year’s Top 100 SA Wines/National Wine Challenge Competition.

The competition, which takes place annually, seeks to identify South Africa’s top wines to ultimately compile a list of South Africa’s Top 100 wines. It was chaired by renowned and respected wine judge, Dr Jamie Goode, and collated by two judging panels, presided over by Richard Kershaw (MW) and Ginette De Fleuriot (CWM), who followed a strict judging regime to arrive at what they deemed to be SA’s best wines.

This year, three of Daschbosch’s wines, the Daschbosch Plicatilis 2013, Daschbosch Exanimo 2014 and Daschbosch Hanepoot 2015 were awarded Double Platinum and listed as part of SA’s Top 100 Wines – recognition for a diverse group of wines which indicates just how adapt the winemaking team is at skilfully handling different varieties.

Daschbosch’s Plicatilis is a fragrant SMV blend, the Daschsbosch Exanimo 2014 a layered barrel matured white blend and the Daschbosch Hanepoot is a sweet – and highly collectable – wine, made from grapes harvested from a block of Muscat d’Alexandrie vines that was planted in the picturesque Breedekloof Valley in 1900.

uniWines Vineyards Group Cellarmaster Nicolaas Rust said “DaschBosch is the iconic wine brand within the uniWines Vineyards portfolio. A brand steeped in heritage, which honours wine-making traditions & passion. These are classic, more traditional wines that indicate provenance, signify quality & craftsmanship. We are very proud that we can say this of not one, but of five wines in our portfolio.”

Apart from Daschbosch’s Plicatilis, Exanimo and Hanepoot claiming Top 100 status, other wines in the portfolio, the Daschbosch Steen 2014 and Daschbosch Procavia 2012 received a Double Gold from judges following stringent selection criteria.

The Daschbosch Procavia is a classic Cab/Merlot red blend, while the Daschbosch Steen is a beautiful barrel-fermented Chenin Blanc, made from grapes grown on an established block in the valley.

Said Rust: “the range of wines in the Daschbosch portfolio really is as diverse as the range of soils that line the base of the Breedekloof valley and which shape the character of our wines. This is largely the result of our farmers’ understanding of the local terroir due to many of them having farmed here for generations and, in conjunction with our viticulturist, deliver a variety of superb quality fruit to the winemaking teams. We are very proud that this ‘character’ is recognised by local and international judges – and we hope that the consumer agrees!”
