At the recent Atkin’s 2018 South African Special Report South African Champion Port Producer – Boplaas Family Vineyards – received four spots in the +90 wines of South Africa. 95 Points were awarded for the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2006, one of only 159 wines to receive 95 points or more from South Africa.
The Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2016 received 94 points, the Boplaas Gamka Branca 2017, a white blend including one Portuguese variety, Verdelho, received 91 points and the Boplaas Touriga Nacional Family Reserve 2014, 90 points.
Boplaas only releases the benchmark Cape Vintage Reserve ports during exceptional vintages. The Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2006 was re-released along with the latest 2016 release.
Crafted from Portuguese varieties (Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional, Souzao and Touriga Franca), according to traditional techniques from the finest fruit of the vintage and destined for decades of enjoyment.
The 2016 recently won double Platinum at the SA Top 100 and the title of Grand Cru National Champion Port for the best Cape Port in South Africa at the 2016 SA Young Wine Show. Soon after its original release, the 2006 vintage was named SA Champion Port Trophy at the SA Young Wine Show. It also received a Veritas Double Gold and Five Stars ratings from Wine Magazine and platter’s South African wine guide.
The Family Reserve Gamka Branca 2017 is a barrel fermented and matured white blend – Branca meaning “white” in Portuguese. The second vintage, combines the Portuguese variety Verdelho – a recent addition to the Boplaas plantings, but one which has a bright future.
Regarded by many in Portugal as that country’s premier grape varietal and mainstay of many fine Ports over the years, Touriga Nacional is a passion at Boplaas. This hardy, yet shy bearing vine allows for the crafting of exceptionally aromatically expressive and age-worthy wines. This wine was one of the Top 10 red table wines at the CAPPA Challenge 2018.
These award-winning wines are available from the Boplaas cellar door in Calitzdorp and at Boplaas’ tasting room in Klipheuwel in Klein Brak along the Garden Route, as well as from discerning fine wine retailers nationally.
